The Ca de Bou, also known as the Perro de Presa Mallorquin. The Ca de Bou is a Spanish bulldog that has an immense head, a lean and muscular body, with a short coat that maybe brindle. They have a relatively high exercise need and are prone to becoming dominant. The Ca de Bou was once used in dog fights and as bull baiting dogs, this breed is now respected as a good guard dog and very loyal to his pet family. They are great with children, active to walk and play a lot. They never bark for no reason.

ABOUT & HISTORY

Ca de Bou is the Catalan translation of Bulldog, a term is used to describe this dog’s functions, instead of a reference to their appearance. They are also known Perro de Presa Mallorquin (Castellano) meaning Bulldog.
The history of a Ca de Bou is gloomy and sad. The breed was mainly bred as an attack dog in the past. They were trained to bite a bull and bring it down. The breed was involved in cruel dog fights, this aggressive and dark history still contend with slander and a bad reputation today. The population of the breed declined sharply after the ban and bull-baiting and dog fighting. But later they were recognized as a dog breed by the FCI. Lovers of this breed saved it from extinction.
The Ca de Bou is still a rare dog breed, however, there are some serious breeders who are working hard to preserve the breed.

CHARACTERISTICS

The Ca de Bou belong to the medium-large dog breeds. The male weigh 35-38kg, while the female on an average are smaller and lighter than their male counterparts. Adult Ca de Bou male reach a shoulder height of approximately 55-58 cm, and the female their height is usually between 52- 55 cm.
The coat of the Ca de Bou is very short and smooth. The breed standard describes the coat of this breed with the colors light brown to golden brown, black and brindle. Some come in white markings, these are commonly found in the chest, forehead or lower legs.
If there is no reason for anger and aggression, they will never show it. They are great with children, very active when they walk and play. Never bark for no reason.

HEALTH & CARE

The Ca de Bou has great needs when it comes to exercise and running around. This breed needs long walk several times a day. Teaching them tricks is a good way of keeping them mentally active.
Grooming the coat of Ca de Bou is undemanding, regular brushing from time to time is completely enough. It also need close contact with people and must be trained from puppyhood. Training this breed needs consistency, clear instructions and loving strictness. It should be noted that aggression, and harshness must never be used when dealing with this breed.
Oral cavity should be examined ones a week, and the teeth brushed ones a month. The ear gently cleaned with an ear wand, it claws trimmed.

COMMON DISEASE

The Ca de Bou are a very health breed, but can have diseases that are characteristic of the breed: hip dysplasia, dermatitis, and stomach disorders.

TRAINING

Leadership is key when training a Ca de Bou. First, you need to familiarize the dog with other animals and people, and then you can gradually, familiarize him with collar and leash. Specialists recommend taking an additional course in guard duty, and then the dog will be able to fully demonstrate his skills as a territory guard.
